Mckenzi
Feminine · “son of Coinneach”
Mckenzi is a Highland clan name with the ending trimmed off. Mackenzie is Mac Coinnich, the son of Coinneach — the Gaelic name that English writes as Kenneth — and the family it belonged to held Ross-shire for centuries. Its move from that to an American girl's first name took about ten years, which is fast even by the standards of surname naming.

The story of Mckenzi
The Mackenzies were one of the significant Highland families, and the surname reached America in quantity through Scottish emigration. It began appearing as a girl's first name in the nineteen-eighties and spread with remarkable speed, taking Mackenna, Mckinley and a wave of other Mac- names with it. The respellings followed immediately, and they went in two directions: dropping the capital K, and trimming the final e. Mckenzi does both. The bare i ending belongs to an older American convention for marking a name as a girl's, so the spelling is doing two different pieces of signaling at once.
Meaning
son of Coinneach
Coinneach is an old Gaelic personal name usually read as comely or handsome, and Mac Coinnich means his son. English rendered the Gaelic ending with a z that was originally not a z at all — the letter in old Scots writing was a yogh, a character English has since lost, and it stood for a y sound. So Mackenzie was said Mac-KENN-yee for a long time before readers who did not know the letter began saying the z, which is now universal.

Pronouncing Mckenzi

muh-KEN-zee, three syllables, stress in the middle. Trimming the final e changes nothing — a bare i and a -ie both spell the same long e in this position, which is why the substitution was available at all.

The Anel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mckenzi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Anel climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Anel's path sketches the road Mckenzi is walking now.
Mckenzi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- There is a real Highland clan and a documented Gaelic name behind it.
- Kenzi works as a short form and stands entirely on its own.
- The sound is completely familiar in American English and never causes a stumble.
- Mackenzie is the standard spelling by a wide margin, and this one will be written that way by default.
- It reads as a surname on a list, which happens to every name that makes this journey.
- The bare i ending reads as informal, which affects how the name lands on a document rather than in a room.
