The story of Mattox
Madog ap Maredudd was the last prince of all Powys, and Madog ab Owain Gwynedd is the legendary prince said to have reached America in 1170 — a story that had real political use in the sixteenth century as an English claim to the New World. The name generated a family of surnames that spread through the Welsh borders and then to America, thickest in Virginia and the Carolinas. Maddox as a given name rose sharply in America after 2002, when Angelina Jolie's adopted son was given the name, and Mattox is one of the variants that followed, peaking in 2015.
Meaning
Son of Madog; fortunate
From Welsh Madog, a personal name generally read as fortunate or good, from mad, good. The English surname forms Maddocks, Maddox and Mattox are patronymics of it, and the final x represents the -cks that English writes for a possessive s after a k. The reading is standard, though the exact sense of the Welsh mad is given variously as good, fortunate or beneficial.

The Jacobie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mattox's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jacobie climbed just as high around 1992, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jacobie's path sketches the road Mattox is walking now.

The trade-off
- The Welsh source is genuine and the meaning is settled and good.
- Matt is available as an entirely ordinary short form.
- The x makes it visually distinctive at no cost to reading.
- Maddox is the commoner spelling and will be written for it.
- The first syllable reads as Matthew's short form, which it is not.
- It is closely dated to the years after 2002.
