The story of Maryana
The islands were reached by Magellan in 1521 and called the Islas de los Ladrones for a while before Jesuit missionaries renamed them in 1668 after their patron, the queen regent Mariana of Austria. She was the widow of Philip IV, the mother of the last Habsburg king of Spain, and she governed during his minority. The trench that runs beside the island arc was named after them in the nineteenth century when soundings established its depth, and the Challenger Deep at its southern end is the lowest known point on the earth's surface, about eleven kilometres below sea level, which is more than the height of Everest. Three people had reached the bottom by 2012. The chain of naming runs from a Hebrew name of unknown meaning through a Roman family to an Austrian archduchess to a hole in the Pacific floor.

Miriam with Anna, or Latin Marianus
Maryana is a compound of Mary and Ana, from Hebrew Miriam, whose meaning is unknown, and channah, favor or grace. It may alternatively descend from the Roman Marianus, belonging to the Marii, which gave the Spanish Mariana. The Mariana Islands and the Mariana Trench are named for Mariana of Austria, regent of Spain from 1665 to 1675. It peaks in the American data in 2007.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Marilena test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Maryana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marilena climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marilena's path sketches the road Maryana is walking now.
Maryana sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
