Maryanna belongs to the greatest of the American compound-name families. Between about 1880 and 1930 Mary was joined to almost everything — Maryann, Maryanna, Marylou, Maryjane, Marybeth, Maryjo — because Mary was so common that a second element was the only way to tell one from another. Maryanna's peak is 1908.

Where it comes from

The story of Maryanna

For roughly a century Mary was the most common girls' name in the English-speaking world by an enormous margin — in some American decades one girl in five. That created a practical problem which compounding solved: a household with three Marys needed to distinguish them, and Maryann, Marylou and Marybeth did it. The compounds began as spoken distinctions and moved onto birth certificates, and many of them were then written as one word. The tradition faded after 1940 as Mary itself declined. It has returned in the twenty-first century in a different form, with Emma and Ava taking Mary's structural place.

Mary joined to Anna — 'grace'

Mary descends from Hebrew Miryam through Greek Mariam and Latin Maria, and its own meaning has never been settled: 'bitter', 'beloved' and 'drop of the sea' have all been proposed and none demonstrated. Anna is the Greek and Latin form of Hannah, from a root meaning grace or favor, and that half is settled. So the compound has one certain meaning and one unresolved one, which is a common condition for names of this kind.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maryanna went to 20 girls in 2025, but Mariana, Marianna and Maryana are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,538, which makes it the 213th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,704 places above the chart.

and 1 rarer spelling.

About 1 girl in 1,045 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 80,363 for Maryanna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
