Marshon
Masculine

There is an Irish John hidden in a great many American names and nobody put him there on purpose. Sean is Irish for John. The ending -shawn, -shon and -sean in Deshawn, Rashawn, Lashawn and Marshon is that name, cut loose from itself and treated as a suffix, and the men who carry it are named for a saint they were never told about.

Our story of Marshon
Our reading is that the -shawn family is the clearest case in American naming of a whole name becoming a suffix. Sean entered wide American use in the 1950s and 60s, borrowed from Irish, and by the 1970s was common enough that its sound was available on its own. Once that happens the ending can be attached to any prefix, and the results, Deshawn, Rashawn, Lashawn, Jashawn, Marshon, arrive in numbers within a single decade. Nothing about the process requires anyone to know what Sean is, or that it is John, or that John is a Hebrew sentence about divine favor. The chain is intact and entirely invisible: Yochanan to Ioannes to Johannes to Jean to Sean to a suffix. This is how naming systems actually recycle material, and it is why an etymology can be true and irrelevant at the same time.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Marshon is an American formation: a prefix Mar-, from the stock that includes Marcus, Martin and Marshall, joined to the -shon ending. That ending derives ultimately from Sean, the Irish form of John, from Hebrew Yochanan, God is gracious, by way of French Jean. In the American names it functions purely as a sound and carries none of that content. Marshon peaks in 1974.

The Thorne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marshon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Thorne climbed just as high around 1956, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Thorne's path sketches the road Marshon is walking now.
Marshon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
