Maricarmen
Feminine · “Spanish "Mary of Mount Carmel”
The Virgin of Carmen has a job at sea. She is the patron of fishermen and of the Spanish navy, and her feast on 16 July is marked in ports from Andalusia to Peru with processions that carry her image onto the water — which is why Carmen is so common in coastal Spain.

The story of Maricarmen
The Carmelite order took its name from Mount Carmel in Israel, and the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel spread across Catholic Europe from the thirteenth century. In Spain it attached itself to the sea: she was declared patron of the Spanish navy in 1901, and coastal towns hold maritime processions on her feast, carrying the image out in a decorated boat. The devotion traveled to Latin America with the same maritime associations, and Carmen became one of the most common Spanish women's names. Maricarmen is the standard compound; the American figures peak in 2000.
Meaning

María combines with Carmen using the Spanish combining form Mari-. Carmen is from the Marian title Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, from Hebrew karmel, a garden or orchard. The Latin word carmen, a song, is a separate word that happens to be spelled the same; the name is not from it.
