Aaliyah Haughton released her first record in 1994 and died in 2001, and in those seven years the -aliyah sound went from rare to everywhere in American birth records. What followed was not imitation of the singer so much as adoption of the shape: once the ending was familiar, it detached and attached to other openings. Maliyah, Amaliyah, Naliyah, Kaliyah, Maleyah, Janiyah, Taliyah. Each is a different opening on the same tail, and each is legible instantly as a girl's name because the tail does that work. Maleyah's peak in 2012 sits in the mature phase of that spread, eleven years after the death that fixed the sound in place, and the ending's Arabic origin has by then traveled a long way from anything Arabic.

The -iyah and -eyah endings entered American naming largely through Aaliyah, from Arabic ʿāliya, high or exalted, which is a genuine and settled name; Maliyah and Maleyah are formed on that ending rather than descending from it. Arabic Māliya and Hebrew Malka have both been suggested casually and neither is supported. What can be said is that the ending is Arabic in origin and the whole name is American.
