The Irish Malachy is not the Hebrew Malachi. The Irish name is Mael Sechnaill, meaning devotee of Saint Seachnall, and it was replaced wholesale by a biblical name that merely sounded similar. This happened to dozens of Irish names in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the originals mostly did not come back.

Where it comes from

The story of Malachy

The substitution of English or biblical names for Irish ones was systematic and it was not always voluntary. Under the penal laws and afterwards, Irish names were recorded by English-speaking clerks who wrote what they could manage, and a rough phonetic match was often preferred to a transliteration. So Donnchadh became Denis, Diarmaid became Jeremiah, Eoghan became Eugene, Aodh became Hugh, Conchobhar became Cornelius, Muirchertach became Mortimer and Mael Sechnaill became Malachy. None of these pairs is related; each is a substitution based on the first sound or two. The result is that a great many Irish families spent two centuries under names that had nothing to do with their own, and the modern revival of Irish naming is in part an undoing of that. Malachy is one of the few substitutes that stuck well enough to feel Irish in its own right.

Meaning

Irish Mael Sechnaill, devotee of Seachnall

The Irish name behind Malachy is Mael Sechnaill or Maoilsheachlainn, from mael, a tonsured servant or devotee, and the name of Saint Seachnall, a fifth-century bishop. It has no connection to the Hebrew Malachi, my messenger, and the two were merged in English by sound alone. Saint Malachy of Armagh, who died in 1148, carried the Irish name and is known everywhere by the Hebrew one. It peaks in the American data in 1897.

Three syllables, stress on the first, and the ending rhymes with key. This is what separates it from the Hebrew Malachi, whose ending rhymes with sky. The two names are distinguished in English by that final vowel alone.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Malachy went to 9 boys in 2025, but Malachi is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 2,701, which makes it the 137th most-given boys’ name of the year — 8,106 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 632 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 189,786 for Malachy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a documented Irish history reaching back to a medieval archbishop.
  • The final vowel distinguishes it clearly from the biblical name.
  • It is genuinely Irish despite the biblical appearance.
What to consider
  • It will be read as the Hebrew Malachi and pronounced accordingly.
  • The Irish name it replaced is unrecognizable in it.
  • It reads as strongly Irish, which may or may not be intended.
