The story of Magdaleno
The site at Migdal was known but unexcavated until construction work in 2009 exposed a synagogue dating to the first century, in use during the years the Gospels describe. Only a handful of synagogues of that date have been found anywhere. At its center stood a carved limestone block, now called the Magdala Stone, with a seven-branched menorah flanked by amphorae and columns, the earliest known depiction of the Temple menorah made by someone who could plausibly have seen it before its destruction in 70. The town itself was a fishing and fish-salting center, and the excavation has uncovered a harbor, streets, ritual baths and a market. It is one of the very few places where the physical setting of the Gospel narratives can be examined directly, and it was found because someone was digging foundations.
