Where it comes from

The story of Macyn

The Macys were among the earliest English families in Nantucket, which is how the surname became so deeply American, and Rowland Hussey Macy's New York shop fixed the spelling in the national eye. When the surname began to be used for girls in the 1990s it arrived carrying that shop with it, and the respellings that followed all work to break the association while keeping the sound: Macey, Maci, Macie, Macyn. The -yn ending was borrowed from Camryn and Jaslyn, where it had already been established as a way of marking a surname as a girl's name. Macyn's best year was 2011.

Meaningscholars disagree

of Massy, from a Gallo-Roman estate name based on Maccius

The surname Macy is generally traced to one of several places in Normandy called Massy or Macey, whose names come from a Gallo-Roman landholder called Maccius or Mattius plus the estate suffix -acum. A second explanation, often printed on name sites, derives it from the medieval given name Matthew; that route is possible for some bearers but is not the main one. The -yn ending is modern and carries no meaning.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Macyn went to 18 girls in 2025, but Masyn is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 51, which makes it the 909th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,416 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 31,515 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,293 for Macyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
