The story of Lorenz
St Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of Rome and was executed in 258 during the persecution under Valerian. The tradition that he was roasted on a gridiron is old, and so is the remark attributed to him partway through, that he was done on that side and should be turned over, which made him the patron saint of cooks. The cult was enormous. Constantine built a basilica over his tomb, his feast on 10 August became one of the great Roman festivals, and the name spread into every European language and eroded differently in each. German kept two syllables in Lorenz. Italian kept four in Lorenzo. French produced Laurent. English produced Lawrence and then Larry. Scandinavian went furthest, reducing the whole to Lars, a name so short that its connection to the Roman deacon is invisible to almost everyone who bears it.
Meaning
Latin Laurentius, from Laurentum
Lorenz is the German form of Laurentius, a Roman name meaning a man of Laurentum, a town in Latium. The -z ending is the standard South German reduction of -entius, the same pattern that gives Franz from Franciscus and Heinz from Heinrich. St Lawrence, a deacon of Rome martyred in 258, made the name universal in Europe. The American peak is 1887.
