Loghan

Loghan adds a Scottish-looking letter pair to a Scottish name that never had one. Logan is Gaelic in origin and means a small hollow in the ground — a dip, a low place — and it names both a Scottish place and the families who came from it. The gh here is doing the same work that gh does in Callaghan and Monaghan, except that in those names it is original.

The story of Loghan
Logan crossed from Scottish surname to American first name in the ordinary way and became widely used for boys, and later for girls as well. The respelling is a more interesting move than it looks. In Irish and Scottish spelling, gh writes a consonant that has mostly gone silent, which is why Callaghan, Monaghan and Donaghue all carry it doing nothing. Inserting a gh into a name that never had one borrows that silence as a signal: it makes the name look older and more Gaelic than the plain spelling does, while changing nothing at all about how it is said.
Meaning
little hollow
Scottish Gaelic lagan is a hollow or a small dip, the diminutive of lag, and it gave its name to a place in Ayrshire and to the family who held it. That derivation is well attested and not disputed. Irish and Scottish Gaelic both use the word freely in place names, which is why hollows and low grounds all over both countries are called some version of Logan. The gh in this spelling is not part of any of it.

The Derward test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Loghan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Derward climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Derward's path sketches the road Loghan is walking now.
Loghan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The Gaelic word behind it is well documented and the meaning is concrete rather than abstract.
- It leans to boys without settling there, so it does not close a door in advance.
- Two syllables with a firm first stress, which carries almost any surname.
- Logan is the standard spelling by an enormous margin, and this one will be rewritten as that everywhere.
- The gh is silent and adds a letter that has to be dictated and will still be dropped.
- The extra letter implies a Gaelic spelling tradition the name does not actually belong to, which anyone who reads Irish will notice.
