Where it comes from

The story of Lazar

Two Lazaruses appear in the New Testament — the beggar covered in sores in a parable, and the man Jesus raises from the tomb. The first gave medieval Europe the word lazar for a leper and lazaretto for a quarantine hospital. Prince Lazar of Serbia, killed at Kosovo in 1389, is a national saint. The name is used across the Balkans and in Jewish communities.

Meaning

God has helped

From Hebrew Eleazar, joining el, God, to a verb meaning to help; Greek dropped the first syllable to give Lazaros. The English word lazaretto, a quarantine hospital, comes from the same name by way of the beggar in the parable.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lazar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Quintus climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning that forms a complete sentence.
  • A national saint in Serbia and a major Gospel figure behind it.
  • Five letters and two syllables, quick to write.
What to consider
  • The medieval word for a leper came from this name, which some will know.
  • Lazarus is the English form and looks quite different.
  • It is close to Lazaro and Eleazar, which are the same name in other languages.
