Quintus
Masculine · “Latin "fifth”
Rome ran an entire civilization on about seventeen first names. The story of Quintus
A Roman man of the late Republic had three names: a praenomen, a nomen naming his clan, and a cognomen naming his branch or a personal characteristic. Only the praenomen was a first name in the modern sense, and there were so few in general use — Gaius, Lucius, Marcus, Publius, Quintus, Titus and a dozen more — that writers abbreviated them to one or two letters and expected to be understood. C. meant Gaius, Cn. meant Gnaeus, Q. meant Quintus. The consequence is that a Roman's individuality lived in his last name rather than his first, the reverse of modern practice. Quintus survived directly into modern use, and the American figures peak in 1917, in a period of classical revival naming.
Meaning
Latin "fifth"
From quintus, fifth. Roman ordinal praenomina included Quintus, Sextus, Septimus, Octavius and Decimus, and they most likely began as birth-order names, though by the classical period they were hereditary and no longer counted anything. The related modern name Quentin descends from Quintinus, a diminutive of the same word. Quintus is the classical form, used unchanged.

The trade-off
- It is a genuine Roman name used unchanged, not a modern reconstruction.
- The meaning is settled and has been stable for over two thousand years.
- Quin and Q are ready short forms.
- The meaning, fifth, does not describe most bearers.
- The -us ending reads as a Latin textbook form to many Americans.
- It is rare enough that it will always need spelling out.
