Lawren
Feminine · “from Laurentum”
Lawren is given to both — 1,098 girls and 59 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Lawren makes a Latin name look like an English one. Laurence comes from a Roman town and a laurel tree, and every spelling of it in English keeps the u — Laura, Lauren, Laurel, Laurie. Substituting w for the u is an English habit borrowed from words like lawn and dawn, and it disguises the name's origin completely.

From Laurentius to Lawren
The story of Lawren
Lauren existed as a French masculine name and barely at all in English until the nineteen-forties, when a young actress was given it as a screen name by the director who cast her. Lauren Bacall became famous almost immediately, and the name moved into general American use for girls within a few years — one of the clearest examples on record of a single person putting a name into circulation. The respellings came later. Lawren, Lauryn and Loren are all in the record, and this one is the least common because it does the most damage to the name's recognizable shape.
Meaningscholars disagree
from Laurentum; or of the laurel
Laurentius means a man of Laurentum, a city near Rome, and the city's own name is usually connected to laurus, the laurel — the tree whose leaves crowned victors and poets. Whether the town was named for its laurels or the connection was made later is not settled, so the laurel reading arrives at one remove. Lauren descends from that line by way of French. Nothing in this spelling changes the derivation; the w is doing cosmetic work only.

The Preston test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lawren's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Preston climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Preston's path sketches the road Lawren is walking now.

- It goes to girls and boys both, which the standard spelling has largely stopped doing in English.
- Lauren is the spelling everyone knows, and this one will be corrected toward it on essentially every document.
- The w obscures the connection to Laura and Laurence, which is the part of the history most people would recognize.
- Read quickly it can be taken for a surname or a typo, and both happen.
