Latrice
Feminine · “of the noble class”
Latrice is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 9,137 girls against 17 boys since 1880.
Latrice is a prefix attached to the back half of a French name. Patrice is the French form of Patricia, and Patricia comes from a Roman word that named a class rather than a quality: the patricians were the families entitled to sit in the Senate. Drop the P, add La-, and the aristocracy comes along by accident.

The story of Latrice
Patrick and Patricia entered English through the Irish church rather than through Rome, and French produced Patrice, which serves men in France and women in the Caribbean and elsewhere. American naming then did what it does with any well-used name: broke it into usable pieces. Trice and Trisha both came out of it, and the La- prefix attached to the first of them. The result is a name whose second half is genuinely old and whose whole is genuinely new, which describes a great many American names and is not a criticism of any of them.
Meaningscholars disagree
of the noble class
Latin patricius describes a member of the patrician order, the hereditary elite of the Roman republic, and the word is built on pater, father, because the order was defined by descent. Patricia and Patrice inherit that. Whether Latrice descends from Patrice or was assembled on the same sound is not recoverable, and a fragment does not carry a meaning across reliably. So the noble reading is available through the second half and not guaranteed by it.

luh-TREESE
luh-TREESE, two syllables, stress at the back, the ending said as a single crisp sound. The French Patrice ends the same way. A reader who treats the final e as silent English will still arrive in the right place, which is why this name travels well.

The Laureen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Latrice's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Laureen climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Laureen's path sketches the road Latrice is walking now.
Latrice sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The second half is a real French name with a documented Latin history behind it.
- Trice works as a short form and sounds like a name rather than a fragment.
- The stress at the end gives the name a clean finish against almost any surname.
- Latrece, Letrice and LaTrice are all in the record, and the capital in the middle is a standing question.
- The name is strongly associated with one American generation and dates a person fairly closely.
- It is recorded for boys as well, though very rarely, so a boy carrying it will be read as a girl on paper.
