Lacee
Feminine · “from Lassy in Normandy”
Lacee has a surprising word behind it. Lacey the surname comes from Lassy, a village in Normandy, and traveled to England with the conquest. Lace the fabric comes from somewhere else entirely — the Latin laqueus, a noose or a snare, by way of a French word for a cord. The two met in English and have been confused ever since.

The story of Lacee
De Lacy was one of the significant Norman families in England and later in Ireland, and the surname survived long after the estates did. It became an American given name in the twentieth century by the usual route, and it moved toward girls quickly — helped, almost certainly, by the fabric, which gave the name an association the surname never had. The respellings followed. Lacey, Lacy, Laci and Lacee are all in the record, and the double-e version belongs to a period when American families were routinely writing a final long e with two letters instead of one.

from Lassy in Normandy
The surname is territorial: a family from Lassy in Calvados took the place as their name, as Norman families routinely did, and carried it to England and then Ireland. What Lassy itself meant is a Gaulish or Latin question with no clean answer. The fabric word is a separate line: Latin laqueus, a noose, softened through Old French into a word for a cord or braid and then into the openwork textile. Nothing connects the two except four letters and a great deal of assumption.

LAY-see, two syllables, stress at the front. The double e settles the ending completely, which -ey and -i do not always do. There is no competing reading of this spelling, which is more than can be said for most of its neighbors.

The Douglas test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lacee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Douglas climbed just as high around 1942, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Douglas's path sketches the road Lacee is walking now.

The trade-off
- The ending is unambiguous, so the name is said right on first sight every time.
- It has a documented Norman family behind it rather than a recent invention.
- Two syllables with an open ending, which balances a blunt surname well.
- Lacey is the standard spelling and this one will be rewritten as that by nearly everyone.
- The fabric association is fixed, and it is the first thing most people think of rather than the last.
- Lacy, Laci and Lacie are all in use, so the name gets spelled out on every form.
