Kobey
Masculine · “Japanese kobe”
Kobe Bryant's father saw Kobe beef on a restaurant menu and liked the word. Kobe is a Japanese port city, and its name means the door of the gods, from a shrine that stood there. So a name that reached hundreds of thousands of American children came from a steak, which came from a city, which came from a gate to a temple.

The story of Kobey
The chain is fully documented at every link, which is unusual. The city of Kobe takes its name from kanbe, households attached to a shrine, written with the characters for god and door, and the Ikuta Shrine it refers to is one of the oldest in Japan. Kobe beef is the meat of Tajima cattle raised in the surrounding prefecture, and it became internationally famous as a luxury item in the late twentieth century. Joe Bryant saw it on a menu before his son was born in 1978 and used the word as a name. When the son became one of the most visible athletes in the world, the name entered the American data, rising through the late 1990s and peaking in the years around 2000. Circulating glosses giving it a Swahili or Hebrew meaning are inventions attached after the fact.

KOH-bee
Two syllables, stress on the first. The Japanese city is KOH-beh, with a short final e rather than a long ee, so the American name and the place name differ in their last vowel.

The Eliazar test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kobey's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eliazar climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eliazar's path sketches the road Kobey is walking now.
Kobey sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
