Khylie takes Kylie and swaps the initial for a Kh-, which is one of the cheapest and most effective moves in modern American respelling: change the first letter and a very common name becomes visibly yours. It appeared in numbers in the 2010s, in the same window that produced Khloe, Khaleesi and Khloee, and its American peak is 2014.

Where it comes from

The story of Khylie

Kylie is Australian before it is anything else. The word entered colonial English from Western Australian languages in the 1800s; the given name became fashionable in Australia in the 1960s and 1970s and then went global with the singer Kylie Minogue from 1987. American use rose steeply through the 1990s. The Kh- respelling is a separate and much later event, and it belongs to a specific American habit: from the mid-2000s the initial consonant became the preferred place to individualise a common name, because it is the letter a reader sees first. Caitlin became Kaitlyn, Chloe became Khloe, Cora became Khora, and Kylie became Khylie.

Meaningscholars disagree

possibly 'boomerang' in Noongar; possibly a blend of Kyle and Kelly

Two accounts of Kylie compete and both are serious. In Australia, kylie is a genuine word for a returning boomerang, taken into English from Noongar and other Western Australian languages and recorded in the nineteenth century — and Australian usage has long treated the name as that word. The competing account makes it a mid-century blend of Kyle and Kelly, or a feminine of Kyle, which fits the way the name actually spread. The Kh- spelling belongs to neither; it is American and recent.

Two syllables, stress on the first, exactly as Kylie; the h is silent and does nothing to the sound. Readers meeting the spelling cold sometimes pause over the Kh- and try a throat consonant, but the intended saying is the ordinary one.

Khylie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2011, with 47 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Khylie went to 21 girls in 2025, but Kylie and Kyliee are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,529, which makes it the 215th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,507 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,051 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 76,537 for Khylie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is thoroughly familiar, so nobody has to learn how to say it.
  • The Kh- spelling is uncommon enough that a bearer is unlikely to share it.
  • Ky works as a short form on any spelling of the name.
What to consider
  • The silent h will be dropped by almost everyone writing the name from dictation.
  • It reads as a deliberate respelling, which some adults treat as a misspelling.
  • The spelling dates the name tightly to the 2010s.
