Khristina is Christina transliterated rather than respelled, and there is a real difference. The kh at the front is the standard way of romanizing the Cyrillic letter kha, so Khristina is what the Russian and Ukrainian forms of the name look like when they are written in the Latin alphabet. It is a spelling with a system behind it rather than a preference.

Where it comes from

The story of Khristina

Christina spread through medieval Europe on the strength of an early martyr's legend and became a royal name in Scandinavia and a common one everywhere else. The eastern churches received it in Greek and passed it into Slavic languages, where the opening consonant is the throaty kh rather than the English k — a genuine difference in sound, not just in spelling. When those names are written in English, kh is the convention that marks it. American records therefore contain Khristina from two quite separate sources: families transliterating a Slavic name, and families respelling an English one for the look of it.

Meaning

a Christian; one who belongs to Christ

Latin Christiana means a Christian woman, and it is built on Christus, which is itself Greek: christos, the anointed one, a direct translation of the Hebrew mashiach. So the name is a translation of a translation, and every link in the chain is documented. The kh spelling does not alter any of it. In Russian and Ukrainian the same name is Khristina or Khrystyna, and the initial letter is the one English has no single character for.

Pronouncing Khristina

kris-TEE-nuh

kris-TEE-nuh in English, three syllables, stress in the middle, the h silent. In Russian and Ukrainian the first consonant is a rasp made at the back of the throat rather than a plain k, and the stress moves — khris-TEE-na, with a fuller final vowel.

Khristina sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 48 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Khristina went to 5 girls in 2025, but Christina, Cristina and Kristina are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 603, which makes it the 454th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,488 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,665 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Khristina itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling is a standard transliteration rather than an invention, which gives it a defensible reason to exist.
  • Kristy and Tina are both waiting inside it and both are fully established.
  • The name is recognized in every European language and needs no translation anywhere.
What to consider
  • In English the h is silent, so the spelling adds a letter and no information for most readers.
  • Christina, Kristina and Cristina are all far more common, and this version will be rewritten as one of them.
  • The kh implies a Slavic origin, which is right for some families carrying it and misleading for others.
