Where it comes from

The story of Kristina

Christina spread across medieval Europe as a devotional name and took hold particularly firmly in Scandinavia, where the K spelling is standard. Queen Christina of Sweden made it internationally visible in the seventeenth century. American families borrowed the northern European forms heavily from the 1960s, and Kristina rose with Kristin, Kristen and Kirsten, peaking in the late 1980s.

Meaning

a Christian, a follower of Christ

From the Latin Christiana, feminine of Christianus. The root is the Greek christos, 'anointed', which entered Greek as the translation of the Hebrew title messiah, so the name passes through two languages before it reaches a meaning.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kristina went to 118 girls in 2025, but Christina, Cristina and Khristina are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 603, which makes it the 454th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,267 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,665 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 13,621 for Kristina itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A genuine Scandinavian and Slavic name with a documented royal bearer.
  • It is spelled identically in Swedish and Russian, so it travels across a very wide area.
  • Kris and Tina are two short forms at completely different registers.
What to consider
  • Christina with a C is commoner in American records and the two are easily confused.
  • It sits inside a very crowded family of near-identical names.
  • It is closely dated to the 1980s.
