The story of India
India became an English girls' name in the nineteenth century, when British families with imperial connections used place names freely — Africa, Ceylon and India all appear in the records. Gone with the Wind gave the name to a character in 1936, which kept it visible in America. It appears in American registers through the twentieth century and peaked in the mid-1990s.
Meaning
river; of the Indus
From the Sanskrit sindhu, 'river' — specifically the Indus. Old Persian rendered it Hindu, Greek Indos, and Latin India for the land beyond it. The words 'India', 'Hindu', 'Sindh' and 'Indus' are all the same original word through different sound changes, which is an unusually clean chain.

About 1 girl in 10,934 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 13,621 for India itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Ericka test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. India's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ericka climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ericka's path sketches the road India is walking now.
