The story of Adalia
Antalya was founded as Attaleia by a king of Pergamon in the second century BC and was Adalia in medieval European usage. Separately, the adal element is among the most productive in Germanic naming. Adalia appears in American records in the nineteenth century and again from the 2000s, and is in current use.
Meaningscholars disagree
noble
Three routes. From the Germanic adal, 'noble', with a Latinate ending. From the Hebrew Adalya, one of Haman's sons named in Esther, of Persian origin and unrecovered meaning. Or from Adalia, the older name of Antalya in Turkey. Only the Germanic route gives a settled meaning.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
