Khole is what happens when a televised spelling meets a large audience: Khloe Kardashian's name is itself a respelling of the Greek Chloe, and Khole is one letter further along the same road. Its American record is unusually legible — it appears in numbers only after 2007, and peaks in 2012, exactly tracking the visibility of the spelling it copies.
How old is the name Khole?

The story of Khole
Chloe appears in the New Testament — Paul writes of news brought by 'those of Chloe' in First Corinthians — which is how a Greek agricultural epithet entered Christian naming. English Puritans took it up in the seventeenth century, and it has been in continuous if quiet use since. The modern surge is different in kind: Chloe entered the American top ten in the 2000s, and the reality television career of Khloe Kardashian from 2007 put a Kh- spelling in front of a very large audience at exactly that moment. A fan of respellings followed — Khloe, Kloe, Khloee, Chloee and Khole — each capturing a share of parents who wanted the sound with a spelling of their own.
Meaningscholars disagree
green shoot, new growth — inherited from Chloe
Chloe is settled: Greek chloe means the first green shoot of a plant, and it was an epithet of Demeter as goddess of young grain. Khole inherits that through Khloe. What is contested is the spelling's own status — the letters of Khloe transposed. Some bearers arrived at Khole as a deliberate variant and some as a spelling that stabilized after the fact, and the birth records cannot tell the two apart. The meaning is genuine; the route to this particular arrangement of letters is American and recent.

Pronouncing Khole
KLOH-ee
Said exactly like Chloe: two syllables, stress on the first, with a silent h. The spelling invites a rhyme with 'hole', and strangers reading it cold do produce KOHL. That misreading is the practical cost of the transposed letters and it does not go away.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Leondra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Khole's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leondra climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leondra's path sketches the road Khole is walking now.
Khole sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The sound is a top-ten name, so it is instantly familiar once said aloud.
- The underlying meaning is genuine and easy to explain in three words.
- The spelling is rare enough that a bearer is unlikely to share it in a classroom.
- Read cold, the spelling gives KOHL rather than KLOH-ee, and correcting it is a lifelong task.
- It will be treated as a misspelling of Khloe by people who notice the transposition.
- The name is dated to a narrow window by its association with a single television era.
