Khaliq
Masculine · “Arabic khaliq”
The Arabic word for ethics is built on the root for creation. From kh-l-q come khalq, creating, khaliq, the creator, khuluq, a person's disposition, and akhlaq, morals. Character, in that language, is literally what one has been made of, and the word for a good character and the word for a made thing share three letters.

The story of Khaliq
The semantic link between making and character runs through a good deal of Arabic thought. Khalq is the act of creation and also physical constitution; khuluq is inner constitution, the shape of a person's disposition; and akhlaq, the plural, is the standard term for the discipline of ethics, the subject of a large medieval literature. A well-known saying of the Prophet describes him as being of a great khuluq, and the same word is used in the Quran. So an Arabic speaker discussing morality is using vocabulary that treats character as something formed, in the way a potter forms clay, which is also the image the creation narratives use. English has a distant parallel in the way we speak of a person being well made or of moral fiber, but nothing so systematic. The name is one of the divine names and carries all of that behind it.
Meaning
Arabic khaliq, creator
From the Arabic root kh-l-q, associated with creating and shaping. Al-Khaliq, the Creator, is one of the ninety-nine names of God, and as with the other divine names it is taken by men in the form Abd al-Khaliq, servant of the Creator, rather than bare. The same root gives khuluq, temperament, and akhlaq, ethics or morals. It peaks in the American data in 2003.

Pronouncing Khaliq
kah-LEEK
Two syllables, stress on the second. Both the kh and the q are sounds English lacks: kh is made at the back of the mouth like the ch of loch, and q is a k formed further back in the throat. English speakers use ordinary k for both.

The Sion test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Khaliq's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sion climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sion's path sketches the road Khaliq is walking now.
