The story of Keone
Hawaiian has two forms of the definite article, ke and ka, and the choice between them is decided by the following sound: ke before words beginning with k, e, a and o, ka before everything else. Personal names incorporate it freely, which is why so many begin with those two syllables. Keanu is ke anu, the coolness. Kealoha is ke aloha, the love. Kekoa is ke koa, the warrior or the koa tree. Kailani is ka lani, the sky. Removing the article does not leave a shorter name; it leaves a bare noun that means something different. English does the same thing occasionally in place names, in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where Spanish speakers hear the article and English speakers do not, but Hawaiian does it as a matter of course in personal naming.

The Otilio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Keone's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Otilio climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Otilio's path sketches the road Keone is walking now.
Keone sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
