Kento
Masculine
Japanese boys' names now end in -to. Haruto, Yuto, Sota, Riku and Ren dominate the modern lists, and the -ro and -o endings that were standard for centuries have almost disappeared. Japanese naming has turned over as fast as American naming has.

The story of Kento
The shift is well documented in Japanese naming surveys. Through most of the twentieth century boys' names ended overwhelmingly in -o, written with the character for man, or in -ro, from the old numbering system, giving Hiroshi, Takeshi, Ichiro and Jiro. From the 1990s those recede sharply and the -to ending takes over, with Haruto, Yuto, Sota, Kaito and Ryuto at the top of the lists. Girls' naming moved even more dramatically: the -ko ending, which covered the great majority of women's names for a century, has all but vanished from newborns since the 1980s. The scale of the change is comparable to what happened in America over the same period, which is a useful corrective to the idea that rapid name turnover is a peculiarly Western or peculiarly modern phenomenon.

The Moritz test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kento's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Moritz climbed just as high around 1946, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Moritz's path sketches the road Kento is walking now.
Kento sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
