The story of Kenley
Kenley in Surrey gave its name to an RAF station that flew in the Battle of Britain, and Kenley in Shropshire is a small parish under the Wrekin. The surname came from the places in the ordinary way, and American families in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries drew on such surnames freely for boys. Kenley's American peak in the 1930s belongs to that habit, alongside Wesley, Stanley and Beverly. It has since become largely a girls' name in American use, following Kinsley and Kenzie, which is a common fate for -ley names.

The king's clearing, or Cena's clearing
The second element is certainly Old English lēah, a woodland clearing or meadow — the commonest ending in English place names. The first is disputed: the Surrey Kenley is generally read as the clearing of a man called Cena, while a derivation from cyning, king, has also been proposed. Both are plausible and the early spellings do not settle it.

The Alfons test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kenley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alfons climbed just as high around 1919, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alfons's path sketches the road Kenley is walking now.
