Keishawn is built out of two pieces that came from opposite sides of the nursery. The ending is Shawn, a boy's name; the opening syllable is the one that starts Keisha, a girl's name. American coinage moves parts between the sexes freely, and this is what that looks like on a birth certificate.

How old is the name Keishawn?

When was the name Keishawn most popular?

Keishawn peaked in 1999, reaching #1932 nationally. Today it ranks #9714, 7,782 places below that high. See the whole 1999 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Keishawn

The American name workshop keeps a small stock of opening syllables and a larger stock of endings, and the two shelves are not sorted by sex. Ke- and Kei- ran through the girls' list first, in Keisha and Keyana and Keyla, from the 1970s onward. Shawn ran through the boys' list at the same time, an Irish name respelled until it looked American. Keishawn joins the two, and the join is audible: the first half is a girls' prefix and the second half is a boys' name, which is why the whole reads unmistakably as a boy's name rather than an ambiguous one. The ending decides. That rule holds across the whole family, and it is why a shared prefix never made these names unisex.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Shawn is an English respelling of Sean, the Irish form of John, from Hebrew Yohanan. The Kei- element carries no meaning of its own; it is a prefix borrowed from the Keisha and Keyana family, whose own origin is unsettled. Nothing is gained by treating the whole as a compound with a translatable sense. The peak is 1999.

Keishawn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1999, with 50 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keishawn went to 7 boys in 2025, but Keyshawn is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 37, which makes it the 891st most-given boys’ name of the year — 8,823 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 46,164 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 244,011 for Keishawn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The second half, Shawn, is a name every American can already spell and say.
  • Kei and KJ both work as everyday short forms.
  • Stress on the second syllable gives it a firm ending.
What to consider
  • The spelling competes with Keyshawn, which the football player Keyshawn Johnson made the better-known form.
  • The 1999 peak dates it closely.
  • The Kei- opening is shared with a large set of female names.
