The story of Kashmere
Shawls from Kashmir reached Europe at the end of the eighteenth century and became a luxury of the Napoleonic period; the English spelling cashmere was fixed by the trade rather than by geographers, which is why the fabric and the region are now written differently in English and identically in most other languages. The word entered American given names in the late twentieth century, alongside a small group of fabric and luxury words used as names, and it also names a well-known neighborhood and high school in Houston. Its best year in United States records is 2018, making it one of the newest names in this group.

of Kashmir, by way of the English word for the wool
Kashmir's own name is traditionally explained in Sanskrit sources from the sage Kashyapa, and other readings have been proposed; none is secure. The English word cashmere is an eighteenth and nineteenth century trade spelling of the same place name, applied to the fine underwool of Himalayan goats. This form with a K and a final e sits between the two and belongs to neither system.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
