Where it comes from

The story of Kady

Stanton's position on names was worked out and argued rather than assumed. She objected to the custom by which a married woman lost her own name and was designated by her husband's, and she pointed out that a name is the only thing a person carries through a whole life. She insisted on Elizabeth Cady Stanton, never Mrs Henry B. Stanton, and made the same argument to other women in the movement. Lucy Stone went further and kept Stone entirely after marrying in 1855, and women who followed her were called Lucy Stoners for a century afterwards. The issue was not symbolic: under coverture, a married woman's legal personality was absorbed into her husband's, and the name was the visible sign of it. Stanton also organized the Seneca Falls convention in 1848 and wrote the declaration it produced.

Greek Aikaterine, meaning unresolved

Kady is a respelling of Katie or of Cady. Katie is a short form of Katherine, whose origin is genuinely unsettled; the connection to katharos, pure, is a later Christian reinterpretation. Cady is separately an English and Dutch surname of uncertain derivation. In American English the t of Katie is a voiced flap, acoustically close to d, which is what the spelling records. It peaks in 1987.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kady went to 11 girls in 2025, but Khady and Cady are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 32, which makes it the 928th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,932 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 50,227 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Kady itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling matches American pronunciation more closely than Katie does.
  • It is short and easy for a child to write.
  • The sound is universally familiar.
What to consider
  • Katie and Kadie are both more common.
  • It is usually taken to be a nickname rather than a full name.
  • A short-a reading, KAD-ee, is possible from the spelling.
