The story of Francie
Francis is one of the very few common Western names that began as a personal nickname and was then adopted wholesale. The boy baptized Giovanni in Assisi around 1181 was called Francesco, the little Frenchman, and became famous enough under the nickname that it displaced his baptismal name entirely and then spread across Europe as a name in its own right. Frances is its English feminine, and Francie one of its familiar forms. The 1950 peak has a documented cause: Betty Smith's novel sold in the millions during the war years and Elia Kazan's film adaptation reached a still larger audience in 1945, and the heroine's name, given in the book as Francie rather than Frances, went onto birth certificates for the rest of the decade. Novels usually name children five to eight years late; this one is on schedule.
Meaning
Latin Franciscus, the Frenchman
Francie is a diminutive of Frances, the female form of Francis, from Latin Franciscus, meaning a Frenchman. It began as a nickname rather than a baptismal name: Giovanni di Bernardone, later Francis of Assisi, was called Francesco because of his father's French trade and his own use of the language.

The Natividad test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Francie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Natividad climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Natividad's path sketches the road Francie is walking now.
