The story of Justo
Roman names before Christianity worked by family: a praenomen, a clan name and a branch name, with meaning almost irrelevant. Christian naming broke that. Converts took names at baptism that described what they aspired to or what the community valued, and Latin adjectives were the obvious material. Justus, just. Felix, fortunate. Clemens, merciful. Pius, dutiful. Innocentius, harmless. Beatus, blessed. Constantius, steadfast. These are transparent to any Latin speaker in a way that Marcus and Gaius are not, and they made a person's name a statement rather than a label. The pattern survived into Spanish and Italian directly, giving Justo, Felice, Clemente and Pio, and it reappeared in a completely different form in Puritan England, where Prudence, Patience, Mercy and Faith did exactly the same work in English.
Meaning
Latin justus, just or righteous
Justo is the Spanish form of Latin Justus, the adjective meaning just, righteous or lawful, from jus, law or right. It was borne by several early martyrs, including the child martyr Justus of Alcala, and it is the source of the surname Justo and of Justin through the derived form Justinus. The American peak is 1890, carried by Spanish-speaking and Filipino families.
