Juli is Julie without its final e, and unlike most such trims this one has a real European counterpart. Juli is the standard Hungarian short form of Júlia and a German and Hungarian spelling in its own right — so the same four letters are a respelling in one country and an ordinary name in another.

Where it comes from

The story of Juli

The gens Julia was one of the oldest patrician families in Rome and gave its name to the month of July and, through Julius Caesar's calendar, to the Julian year. The feminine Julia was borne by Caesar's own daughter and by several early saints, which carried it into Christian Europe. Hungarian took Júlia and clipped it to Juli by the ordinary rule that Hungarian short forms cut to two syllables. The American Juli, peaking in 1961, arrives alongside Julie's own peak and is generally the English name with a letter removed rather than the Hungarian one.

From the Roman family name Julius, of disputed origin

Julia is the feminine of Julius, one of the great Roman gentilic names. Its own etymology is not settled: the family claimed descent from Iulus, son of Aeneas, and a connection to Jupiter has been proposed, as has a root meaning "downy-bearded" for a youth. None is established. What is certain is the Roman name and the whole family descended from it.

Juli sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1961, with 311 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Juli went to 15 girls in 2025, but July is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 32, which makes it the 928th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,205 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 50,227 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Juli itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
