Corene sits at the end of a long line that starts with a Greek word for a girl. Kore was what the Greeks called Persephone before she had a name of her own — simply the maiden — and English has been rebuilding it as Cora, Corinne, Corena and Corene for two centuries.

How old is the name Corene?

Corene first appears in US birth records in 1883 — 142 years ago. The typical Corene alive today was born around 1930, making them about 95 years old. About 1,200 people named Corene are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Corene

Kore was a title rather than a name: the Greeks used it of Persephone, and archaeologists still use it of the standing statues of girls found across the Greek world. The name Cora, however, does not reach English straight from Greece. It arrives in the nineteenth century, and much of its spread is credited to James Fenimore Cooper, who gave the name to the elder of the two sisters in The Last of the Mohicans in 1826, a book read on both sides of the Atlantic for a century afterwards. Once Cora was established, English lengthened it in every available direction, and Corene is one of those extensions.

Meaningscholars disagree

maiden, girl

The usual derivation is the Greek kore, a girl or maiden, though the chain from that word to the English names runs through several languages and is not documented at every step. Corene itself is an American ending fitted onto the front.

Corene sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 93 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Corene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at sight and needs no explanation.
  • Cora is available as a short form and is a complete name in its own right.
  • The Greek word behind it is one of the oldest and simplest attached to any English name.
What to consider
  • Corene, Coreen, Corine and Corinne are four spellings of nearly one sound.
  • The stress is genuinely unsettled, so the name will be said two ways.
  • The -ene ending places it in the first half of the twentieth century.
