The story of Juaquin
The Protoevangelium of James was written around the middle of the second century and it fills gaps the canonical gospels leave. It names Mary's parents Joachim and Anne, describes her miraculous birth to an elderly childless couple, her presentation in the Temple as a small child, and her betrothal to an older widower. None of that is in the New Testament. The church rejected the book as scripture and absorbed its content wholesale: the feasts of the Presentation of Mary, of her Nativity, and of Saints Joachim and Anne all descend from it, as does a great deal of medieval painting. So two of the most used names in Catholic Europe, Anne in every language and Joachim in Spanish, Portuguese, French and German, come from a text nobody regards as authoritative. It is a good example of how much of a tradition lives outside its official documents.
