The story of Juandiego
The account of the apparitions at Tepeyac has a Nahua convert, Juan Diego, carrying roses in his tilma to the bishop of Mexico and finding the image of the Virgin printed on the cloth. Whatever a reader makes of the story, its effect on Mexican naming is beyond dispute: Guadalupe is one of the commonest names in Mexico for both sexes, and Juan Diego is given as a unit. John Paul II beatified him in 1990 and canonized him on 31 July 2002 in Mexico City. American birth records show Juandiego climbing through the 1990s and peaking exactly in the canonization year, then settling back — one of the cleanest examples in the whole data set of a single event moving a name.
Meaning
God is gracious; and the Saint James element
Juan is Spanish for John, from Hebrew Yôḥānān, God is gracious — settled. Diego is the Spanish form of the name of Saint James the Greater, arrived at through Santiago and Sant Yago; its exact route is debated but its identification with Santiago is not. The compound means nothing beyond the two names and the one man who joined them.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Juandiego's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Johnmark climbed just as high around 1985, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Johnmark's path sketches the road Juandiego is walking now.

The trade-off
- Both halves are among the most established names in the Spanish-speaking world.
- It carries a specific saint, with a specific date, rather than a vague association.
- Juan and Diego are each usable alone.
- Written solid it looks like an error to anyone who knows the Spanish convention.
- Nine letters in one field will be truncated by databases and forms.
- It is unmistakably Catholic and Mexican, which is either the point or a lot to carry.
