The story of Joyce
Judoc was a son of the king of Domnonee in Brittany in the seventh century, and when his brother abdicated to become a monk Judoc was offered the throne and refused it, going on pilgrimage to Rome and then living as a hermit on the Ponthieu coast. The place became Saint-Josse-sur-Mer and his relics drew pilgrims; English travelers brought the cult home, which is how Josse and Joyce entered English use. It was an ordinary man's name in medieval England and produced the surname Joyce, which is why the Irish novelist bore it. The shift to female use happened in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, helped by the resemblance to the word joy, and by 1940 the male use had almost gone. The Breton abdication is the sort of story that made a saint: refusing power was the qualification.
Meaning
Breton iudoc, lord
Joyce descends from Judoc, the name of a Breton saint, from a Celtic element iudh or iud, a lord, the same element as in the Welsh names Idwal and Iestyn. The Normans brought it to England as Josse, which became Joyce. The association with the English word joy is a later reinterpretation and not the origin. The male peak is 1932.

The Collins test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joyce's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Collins climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Collins's path sketches the road Joyce is walking now.
