The story of Josselyn
Joscelin was ordinary among the Anglo-Norman aristocracy and generated the surnames Jocelyn, Joslin and Gosling. It faded as a first name, revived in nineteenth-century England, and crossed to girls in the twentieth century — the same journey Evelyn, Vivian and Shirley made in the same period. Its American life since 1990 has been strongly Hispanic: Jocelyn, Joselyn, Josselyn and Jocelin all appear in quantity in Mexican-American and Central American families, and the double-s spelling in particular belongs to that community. Josselyn's peak in 2007 sits at the height of the whole family's American run.
Meaning
Of the Gauts
From the Germanic Gautelen or Gauzlin, a diminutive formed on the tribal name of the Gauts or Geats, a people of southern Sweden — the same name behind Gothic and behind Beowulf's own people. Norman French made it Joscelin and brought it to England in the eleventh century as a man's name. The reading is standard; the double s of Josselyn is a Spanish-influenced American spelling.
