Where it comes from

The story of Nyoka

Republic Pictures made its money on serials — twelve or fifteen chapters, one a week, each ending with the heroine in mortal danger. Early in the war years the studio adapted an Edgar Rice Burroughs adventure and renamed its jungle heroine Nyoka, and she was popular enough to earn a sequel that carried her name in its title. American girls born in those two years are the whole story of this name in the record: it appeared, it was given, and it faded almost as quickly as the serial did. Names taken from the screen often behave like that. The unusual part is how clean the trail is — most causes have to be inferred, and this one does not.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Nyoka is a real Swahili word, and it means snake. That is almost certainly not what it means here. The name reached American records from a film studio that wanted a short, exotic-sounding name for an adventure heroine, and there is no sign that the choice was made by anyone who spoke the language or intended the sense. A word can be genuine and still not be the origin of the name that resembles it.

Fashion outlook

Nyoka sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, sonorous and completely distinct from anything else in American use.
  • The sounds are simple, so it survives being read aloud by people who have never seen it.
  • It has a traceable, tellable origin, which most rare names cannot offer.
What to consider
  • Anyone who knows Swahili will hear the word for snake, and that is worth knowing before rather than after.
  • The name is tied to a brief moment in American film, so it carries a date with it.
  • It will be spelled Neoka or Nioka by ear about as often as it is spelled correctly.
