Joslin
Feminine · “of the Gauts”

Joslin is the shortest spelling of this name and also the oldest. Before it was anyone's first name it was an English surname, spelled Joslin, Jocelin and Gosling in parish books for centuries, carried by families descended from a Norman ancestor. Everything longer — Jocelyn, Jocelynn, Joselyne — came afterward. This is the one that never grew.

The story of Joslin
The Normans brought Joscelin to England as a man's name in the eleventh century and it was in ordinary use for two hundred years. Then it did what a great many Norman names did: it stopped being given and started being inherited, surviving as the surname of the families who had carried it. Joslin, Jocelyn, Josselyn and Gosling are all recorded as English family names, and several are still common. The return journey — surname back to first name, and boy's name to girl's name — happened in the twentieth century, and this spelling made the trip carrying the fewest letters of any version.
Meaningscholars disagree
of the Gauts
The Norman name Joscelin is generally traced to a Germanic name meaning one of the Gaut people, a tribe from southern Sweden known to Old English poetry as the Geats. The competing reading connects it to Latin iocosus, playful, and it has the shape of a story told to explain a sound rather than a real derivation. As a surname the meaning is doubly remote: a family name records an ancestor, not a description, and by the time it becomes a first name again it is three removes from anything it once meant.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Joslin went to 5 girls in 2025, but Joslyn and Joslynn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 94, which makes it the 866th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,076 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 17,099 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Joslin itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Sakina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joslin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sakina climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sakina's path sketches the road Joslin is walking now.
Joslin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Six letters for a name that usually takes eight or ten, and nothing in it is silent.
- It is the historically attested English form rather than a modern respelling, which is unusual for the shortest version of anything.
- It reads as a surname-style first name, which sits comfortably on either a girl or a boy.
- People who know Jocelyn will add the missing syllable when they say it, and the correction is a small one that has to be made often.
- Because it is also a live surname, it will occasionally be read as a last name on a list.
- This spelling goes to boys as well, though very rarely, so a boy named Joslin will be assumed to be a girl on paper.
