Joslyn

The Normans brought it to England, English made it Jocelyn, and America made it a woman's name and then trimmed the spelling.

From Gauzelin to Joslyn
The story of Joslyn
Gauzelin was a Frankish man's name, carried to England by Normans in the eleventh century, where it settled as Jocelyn and stayed masculine for several hundred years. It became a surname as well. The shift to women happened in English in the modern period — a common fate for men's names ending in a soft, light syllable — and by the time it reached general American use it was a girls' name almost exclusively. Joslyn, Jocelyn, Josalyn and Joscelyn are all live spellings now, and the Jos- opening pulls it toward Josephine in most people's ears, which is a different name entirely.
Meaning
of the Gauts — a Germanic tribal name
Gauzelin is a diminutive of Gauz, referring to the Gauts or Geats, a people of southern Sweden. The name therefore identifies a person by their tribe rather than describing them, which is common in early Germanic naming. Joslyn inherits this; the reading is not disputed, though it is rarely given accurately on naming sites.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Joslyn went to 63 girls in 2025, but Joslynn and Joslin are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 94, which makes it the 866th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,853 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 17,099 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 25,512 for Joslyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Eboni test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joslyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eboni climbed just as high around 1982, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eboni's path sketches the road Joslyn is walking now.

The trade-off
- Joss and Lyn are both natural short forms and both stand alone as names.
- A documented thousand-year history, unusual for a name that reads as modern American.
- Two clean syllables that pair well with most surnames.
- Jocelyn is the standard spelling, so this one will be corrected on forms indefinitely.
- The Jos- opening makes people hear Josephine and reach for the wrong name.
- It was a man's name for most of its life, which surprises people who look it up.
