The story of Aditi
In the Rigveda, the oldest layer of Indian religious poetry, Aditi is the mother of the Adityas — the gods named for her — and she is addressed as the sky, the earth, what has been and what is yet to come. She is invoked for freedom from constraint of every kind, including guilt and sickness. The word never stopped being an ordinary Sanskrit adjective either, which is part of why it works so well as a modern name: it is a goddess and a description at the same time. It is in ordinary use across India and reaches United States records with Indian families.
Meaning
boundless, unbounded, free
Sanskrit a-diti: the negative prefix a- with diti, 'binding, limitation', from the root da, 'to bind'. Not bound, therefore infinite. The reading is transparent to anyone who reads Sanskrit and it is not disputed.
Pronouncing Aditi
UH-dih-tee
Three light syllables with the stress on the first. The d is dental — tongue against the teeth — rather than the English d made on the ridge behind them, which is why it sounds softer in Indian mouths. ah-DEE-tee is the common American saying.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aditi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Calli climbed just as high around 1990, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Calli's path sketches the road Aditi is walking now.

The trade-off
- An exact meaning with three thousand years of documentation behind it.
- Five letters, easy to spell, and every sound in it exists in English.
- Adi is a short form already in general use across India.
- English speakers often move the stress to the middle, ah-DEE-tee, which is not how it is said in India.
- Aditi and Aditya are close on paper and the second is usually a boy's name, so forms get confused.
