English cannot spell a stressed final e. In French it writes an accent, in Spanish the stress rule handles it, but English uses final e for silence: hope, name, live. A name whose last sound is a stressed ay has no orthography available to it, which is why Jonte, Jontae, Jontay and Jonta all exist and none of them is right.

Our story of Jonte
Our reading is that this family of names exposes a real gap in English spelling. Final stress on an open syllable is common in French, Spanish and Italian and rare in English, which is why English borrows those words with their own spellings intact: cafe, resume, fiance, all of which we write with an accent when we can be bothered and without one when we cannot. Names in this family have the same problem and no accent available in official records. The result is a set of spellings that each solve part of it: -te leaves the vowel unmarked, -tay spells it out, -tae borrows a digraph, -te with an accent is correct and gets stripped by every database it passes through. None of them is standard because there is nothing for them to be standard against. The sound is stable; only the writing is unsettled.

Jonte is an American formation joining the Jon stem, from John, to a stressed final syllable written -te. The pattern belongs with Deonte, Donte and Rontae and is one of the more distinctive rhythms in American naming. Neither element carries an inherited meaning in the compound. It peaks in 1997.

Pronouncing Jonte
jon-TAY
Two syllables, stress on the second, with the final vowel long and open. JON-tee, treating the final e as an English -y ending, is a common misreading and the reason many families use the -tay spelling instead.

The Niel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jonte's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Niel climbed just as high around 1958, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Niel's path sketches the road Jonte is walking now.
Jonte sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
