Where it comes from

The story of Johannah

Joanna appears in Luke's gospel as the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, one of the women who supported Jesus and who came to the tomb. The name was ordinary through Christian Europe in every language's version, and English had Joan for centuries as the standard feminine of John before Jane displaced it. The longer Latin and German spellings — Johanna, Johannah — came into English use in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and America used them heavily among German, Scandinavian and Irish families. The 1884 peak in the American record sits at the height of that usage, and the name has been rare since 1930.

Meaning

God is gracious

From Hebrew Yôḥānān, from the divine name Yah and ḥānan, to be gracious, in its feminine form. The reading is settled and is the same as that of John, Jane, Jean, Ivan, Sean and Giovanni. The doubled n and the final h of Johannah are spelling choices from German and Latin practice, not separate elements.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Johannah went to 24 girls in 2025, but Johanna and Johana are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 413, which makes it the 580th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,658 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,892 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 66,969 for Johannah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and shared with one of the largest name families in the world.
  • Jo, Hannah and Josie are all ready-made and completely ordinary.
  • The name is spelled recognizably across most of Europe.
What to consider
  • Joanna and Johanna are both commoner and will be written for it.
  • The final h has no function in English and will be dropped constantly.
  • It is strongly associated with the nineteenth century in American ears.
