Joellen
Feminine · “torch”
Joellen is two names in one word, and the first of them is the busiest half in American compound naming. Jo attached itself to almost everything for two generations — Jo Ann, Jo Beth, Jo Marie, Jo Ellen — and eventually the space between them closed up. Ellen, the second half, is the English form of one of the oldest women's names in Europe.

Where it comes from
From Helene to Joellen
The story of Joellen
Helen came into English through the medieval church, where the mother of the emperor Constantine was venerated as Saint Helen, and it arrived in the common form Ellen rather than the classical one; the two lived side by side for centuries as different names before anyone noticed they were the same. Jo meanwhile was a twentieth-century American workhorse, a syllable available to precede anything. The double name written as two words was the older style; writing it closed up as a single given name came later, and it made the name legally one thing rather than two, which was often the point of it.
Meaningscholars disagree
torch; or shining
Ellen is Helen, and Helen's meaning has never been settled. A Greek word for a torch is the traditional answer, and a connection to a root about brightness or the sun is the other, and both have been argued for a very long time without resolution. Some hold that the name is older than Greek and was inherited rather than built. The Jo half comes from Joan, Joanna or Josephine, and adds a second meaning rather than modifying the first — a compound owns both and neither.

The Evonne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joellen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Evonne climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Evonne's path sketches the road Joellen is walking now.
Joellen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Both halves are ordinary familiar names, so nothing about the sound requires explanation.
- It offers two complete short forms that go in entirely different directions.
- As one word it functions as a single legal first name, which a two-word double name does not always do.
- It will be split back into two words by people and by databases alike, and often hyphenated for good measure.
- Jo Ellen, JoEllen and Joellen are all in use, and the capital letter in the middle is its own recurring argument.
- The compound structure dates the name to the middle of the last century about as precisely as a name can be dated.
