Jody became a name in its own right in the United States in the mid twentieth century, and it did so on both sides of the ledger at once — as a boy's name, largely in the South, and as a girl's name almost everywhere. That double life is why the spellings proliferated: Jodi, Jodie, Jody and Jodee are all in the record, and the choice among them often signaled which child was meant, without ever doing so reliably. The double-e version belongs to the same American habit that produced Renee, Desiree and Dee — a way of writing a final long e that leaves no room for a reader to guess wrong.
