Where it comes from

Our story of Sherian

American double names go through three stages. First they are two words with a space: Sheri Ann. Then they are hyphenated or run together on a form, because the federal record has no space for a middle name and families write what they say. Then, after a generation, the join disappears entirely — the name is spelled as one word, said as one word, and the two halves stop being separable even by the people carrying them. This name is at the third stage. Almost nobody meeting it hears the second element, which is a good measure of how completely the fusion has worked.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front is a syllable that came off Sheryl, Sherry and Shirley; the back is Ann, which descends through Greek from a Hebrew name meaning favor. Fused into one word, neither half is doing its own work, and the compound has no meaning of its own.

Pronouncing Sherian

SHER-ee-un

Three syllables, stress at the front. The final syllable is unstressed, which is why the Ann disappears.

Fashion outlook

Sherian sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
