Jizelle writes Giselle the way it sounds. English gi before a vowel can be hard as in gift or soft as in giant, and there is no rule — so a family who wants the soft reading guaranteed writes a J, which in English is never anything else. The respelling removes a real ambiguity.

Where it comes from

The story of Jizelle

Giselle poses two spelling problems in America at once. To an English reader the initial G is ambiguous; to a Spanish reader it is unambiguous and wrong, because Spanish G before i is an H sound. Families solve them differently: Gisell drops the silent letters for Spanish, and Jizelle changes the consonant for English. Both are respellings of the same French name and both peak within a decade of each other, Jizelle in 2008. The J spelling is the one that reads as most thoroughly Americanized.

Meaning

Old German "pledge, hostage"

From Old High German gisal, a pledge or a person given as surety in a treaty — an honorable role in early medieval diplomacy, and a poor guide to the modern English sense of hostage. Gisela was a Frankish royal name; French made it Gisèle and the 1841 ballet made it famous. The etymology is settled.

Pronouncing Jizelle

jih-ZELL

Two syllables with the stress on the second. The J removes all ambiguity for an English reader, which is the point. French Gisèle is zhee-ZEL with a softer initial consonant that English does not have.

Jizelle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 104 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jizelle went to 15 girls in 2025, but Jiselle is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 49, which makes it the 911th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,222 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 32,801 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Jizelle itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling guarantees the pronunciation, which the original does not.
  • It has a documented Frankish royal history and a famous ballet behind it.
  • It is short, two syllables, with a strong final stress.
What to consider
  • Giselle is far more common and will be written by default.
  • The most obvious clipping is unfortunate in English.
  • Giselle, Gisell, Jizelle and Gizelle all coexist.
