Jiles
Masculine · “Greek aigidion”
J and soft G are the same sound in English, and always have been. The letter J did not exist as a separate letter until the sixteenth century, when printers split it off from I. That is why Giles and Jiles are one name written two ways, neither more correct than the other.

The story of Jiles
The Roman alphabet had one letter for both the vowel i and the consonant y, and one for both u and v, so early printed English used I and V for four sounds. Gian Giorgio Trissino argued in 1524 for splitting them, and by the mid-seventeenth century J and U were established as separate letters. This is recent enough that early modern texts still spell Jesus as Iesus and just as iust. English had meanwhile also let the letter G go soft before e and i, giving gem and giant a j sound. So the two letters overlap completely in that position, and a name can be written with either. Giles and Jiles, Gerald and Jerald, Gemma and Jemma are the same names with a choice of letter, and the choice usually records which spelling the family or the clerk knew.

Greek aigidion, a young goat
Jiles is a respelling of Giles, from Latin Aegidius, itself from Greek aigidion, a kid or young goat, and related to aigis, the goatskin shield of Zeus and Athena. Whether the name meant the animal or the shield is disputed. Giles was one of the commonest medieval English names through St Giles, an eighth-century hermit and the patron of cripples and beggars. The American peak of the Ji- spelling is 1905.
